My name is Diana and I am creating this web page for a class about The New Generation. I am currently majoring in Education & Psychology and am hoping to go to law school next year. The web pages you are about to see are about an extraordinary woman, Christy Haubegger, who at the age of 27 has already created her own magazine called "Latina". Paola and I chose Ms. Haubegger as the topic for our web page because as Latinas, we often find it very hard to find female role models that come from a similar background as ours. The underrepresentation (and misrepresentation) of Hispanics in American society has always been a topic that has interested me. I am myself a mixed breed of a Puerto Rican father and a Mexican American mother. I have lived both in Houston, TX and in Puerto Rico and have developed a great love for my Mexican American and Puerto Rican cultures. I am very proud of my heritage and have found it a blessing to have been raised biculturally since it has helped me gain a lot of cultural flexibility. I find it frustrating, however, that in the United States, there are so few Latina role models when in fact they have so much to offer. As a woman I also admire Ms. Haubegger because women are not nearly as represented in the professional world as they should be. She is living proof that even at a young age, women can develop great ideas and have great insight despite being in such a male dominated field.
Within these pages we have also included topics about ethnicity and feminism. These are issues pertinent to the new generation because from what I have seen, our generation seems to be becoming a little more tolerant towards individual differences (be it ethnic, racial, sexual, or gender) than previous generations. We still have a long way to go, but we seem to slowly be moving in the right direction.
